The latest news roundup from the SMMT.
UK fleet grew 3.7% last year

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has just released its Motorparc census data for 2007.   "It's a real achievement to have it ready earlier than in previous years, without having compromised our data quality standards," said Martin Taylor, census database manager for the SMMT.  The UK total car fleet has grown just 1% over 2006, down from a peak of 3% annual growth ten years ago.  In contrast the nation's van and light truck fleet grew 3.7% last year and by 34% over the last decade.   The SMMT's Automotive Data Services team is already busy producing tailored reports for existing customers and dealing with enquiries from new customers.  "We can slice the data in virtually any way you want it, says Taylor."  SMMT member firms get a 25% discount on data deals.

CitySprint ups the security stakes

CitySprint, which says it is the UK's largest privately owned same-day Courier network, has introduced a secure data courier service.  It says its SecureData Courier service offers reliable, secure transport for valuable and sensitive data in the UK.   The new service uses a single courier for each delivery and a specialist support team to help with bookings and ensure the job is done to the customer's requirements.  Packages are delivered to the addressee only, rather than a firm's receptionist or office and the entire process can be tracked on-line in real time.  Customers get a time-stamped PDF detailing the entire journey and a copy of the recipient's signature within minutes of the successful delivery.

Kelly to publish megatruck report at last

Answering a parliamentary question last week, Ruth Kelly, transport minister said she aimed to publish the long awaited report into megatrucks, or in snappy, governmentspeak, Extra Long Heavy Vehicles "in a matter of months" and "before the summer recess".  Her aim is to give the House of Commons the opportunity to form its own views on the subject.  But she said she "would need a huge amount of persuasion" that megatrucks are the answer to traffic congestion."  It seems unlikely that 25m long, 60 or 80 tonne trucks will make it onto UK roads any time soon.
