Transport News Brief Week 17
The latest news roundup from the SMMT.
Biggest and best CV Show
"That was the biggest and best CV Show ever," said Tony Young, CV Show manager. "We had a terrific response from delighted exhibitors throughout the three-day show. The specialist areas worked extremely well, and compliments about the quality of visitors have been consistent." The CV Show is the biggest of its type in Europe and a shop window for business sectors worth at least £10bn. "Visitor numbers look better than expected, though we'll not have the audited data for some weeks. Importantly, at the show we took over 100 enquiries for the 2009 CV Show, with many of this year's exhibitors looking for bigger stands. Next year's show will be in halls 1 to 5 at the NEC from 28 to 30 April next year," said CV Show marketing consultant Bob Sockl.

The best CV Show we've ever had
This year's CV Show was "the best we've ever had" according to Derek Beevor, managing director of Road Tech Computer Systems Limited. "The stand was crammed full, all day, every day. In all the years we've been exhibiting here we've never had such successful show, it's the best we've ever had". Throughout the three days, the firm's stand was packed with visitors wanting to see its Tachomaster on-line tachograph analysis system. No matter how short a time they spent on the stand, everyone got a free CD of the Tachomaster software and free 28-day trial. "People like to be able to try before they buy and with our free software trial that's exactly what everyone who saw us can now do. And if you didn't make it to our stand, then you can still download a free copy of Tachomaster and have the free 28-day trial. All you need to do is visit www.tachomaster.co.uk"

Modecs drive three laps of M25 at CV Show
Modec made the most of the opportunity to run the first electric vehicle ride and drive event in CV Show history. This ran for the three days of the CV Show, with three tucks going virtually non-stop. Drivers included government ministers, politicians and senior industry specialists. "The vehicles' acceleration, performance and handling won over even the most sceptical of drivers," said Jamie Borwick, Modec's chairman. Between them, those three trucks travelled a distance equal to three laps of the M25. "But if you missed the opportunity to try one, call us and we'll find a way to help."

FTA wants mega truck trials
The Freight Transport Association says it awaits the Government's response to a Parliamentary Question tomorrow, Tuesday 22 April asking the secretary of state for transport about plans to allow longer, heavier trucks on some UK roads. The FTA wants mega truck trials to see if they bring any benefits to the UK economy and environment. In a letter to Ruth Kelly, secretary of state for transport in February, Theo de Pencier FTA chief executive said that higher capacity trucks could hurt rail freight but cut road freight fuel consumption emissions by up to 30%.

International interest for Modec
At this year's CV Show the British-based Modec was pleased by the passionate interest shown by potential international dealers. Modec Netherlands and Modec US are Modec's first two international bodies and their representatives visited the firm's stand at the Show. "It's impressive to see Modec's growth in its first year and international expansion is the obvious next step," said William Doelle of Modec US.

Quality enquiries for parts4taillifts
At the CV Show for the fifth consecutive year, parts4taillifts said this year's event produced the highest quality of new enquiries yet. "It was great to see so many of our existing customers taking the time to come and see us whilst they were at the show," said David Conman, managing director. "I was also absolutely delighted with the quality of new enquiries we received. These could prove very significant to us."

Terrific show
"Terrific is the only word to describe the reaction of the visitors to the CV show when they saw our stand", said Gerry Brooke-Bennett, business development manager at calendar makers Rose of Colchester. "This was the first time we've exhibited and we were amazed at the amount of interest generated by our range of transport-related promotional calendars. Many people were surprised at our minimum order quantity of 25 and that we don't invoice till they are despatched." Brooke-Bennett said the firm saw some existing and many more new customers, which all helped with its centenary celebrations.

CV Show boost for Hybrid+
Connaught Engineering says its Hybrid+ energy saving technology for light vans got a welcome boost from its launch at the CV Show. "The event proved a great success," said a spokesman. The company took firm orders and reports "unprecedented levels of interest" from large national and international companies as well as small fleets operating throughout the UK. Connaught will now increase production of the Hybrid+ units by 20% at its South Wales plant to cope with demand created at the CV Show. Its retrofit kit costs £2,750.00 to install and can be fitted to all major van makes.

RHA's three-point plan to save truckers
The CV Show at Birmingham's NEC gave Roger King, the RHA's boss, the perfect opportunity to call for the Government to support the UK's struggling truckers. "Record diesel prices are now seriously distorting the economics of the industry," he said. He wants the government to scrap the fuel tax hike slated for October, establish a bench price for oil at $110 a barrel with any further price increases offset by a fuel duty reduction and halve the VAT repayment period for fuel. "These are three positive ideas," which King says will help truckers cope with the cash flow pressures they face."

Plastic bodies a hit at the CV show
PolyBilt Europe launched a new concept in body design - plastic or co-polymer to be precise. Having made fire vehicle bodies out of co-polymer for several years and seen its market share grow well, PolyBilt Europe decided to launch the concept at this year's CV show. "PolyBilt ticks all the right boxes: light, damage resistant, recyclable, easy to repair, flexible and made in the UK," said Alan McClafferty, managing director. "We worried that people might not get just how good this concept is but everyone got it straight away". McClafferty says that most people found the idea of a body that is lighter, stronger and comes with a 15 year warranty very attractive.

Fantastic response for used truck sales system
The CV Show saw the highly successful launch of a new concept in used truck sales - the UK's first independent freelance used truck sales force to work directly for operators. "The response from visitors was fantastic, we couldn't be happier," said Mark Mellor, managing director at the The Truck Salesman. "Our aim is to get operators the highest returns on their vehicles. Only fleets big enough to have dedicated people to sell their vans and trucks get the true market value." Mellor says he was able to show that the Truck Salesman will give fleets the flexibility and resource to sell for themselves with minimal overheads.

Reversing alarms meet standards for quiet night-time deliveries
Brigade Electronics got a NAS-Piek certificate at the CV Show for its broad-band sound reversing alarms. The unique Bbs-tek system alerts pedestrians to a reversing vehicle without causing a noise nuisance. They work below 60dB, meaning trucks can do night-time deliveries without annoying the neighbours. Bbs-tek has been written into the Olympic Delivery Authority's Code of Construction Practice for the 2012 Olympic Games and all construction sites in the GLA area of London. Broad-band sound alarms are directional, locatable and now considered the safest on the market.

CV Show Workshop Zone ideal
"The CV Show's Workshop Zone appears to have been the ideal place for garage equipment manufactures to exhibit," says Dave Garratt, chief executive of the Garage Equipment Association. "I received nothing but praise from our members, with most of them saying, "Wednesday was our best day, we were rushed off our feet all day handling enquiries". Garratt says his cameraman has posted snippets from the show on the GEA website at www.gea.co.uk.

Smart power relay sparks interest
E-T-A says it had a good time at the CV Show. "Our solid state relay and circuit breaker in a standard automotive relay package attracted a lot of interest," said the firm's John Cannell. With no contacts to burn or arc, it will last the life of the vehicle and needs no fuse, as the integral circuit breaker takes care of overloads. "We got a big enquiry from a major OEM and several smaller ones. - A good show!"

EU considers pedestrian safety regulations
Concept Mouldings on stand 12-539 at the CV Show just asked the UK Department for Transport to keep up the pressure on EU pedestrian safety regulations. "This is part of an industry wide consultation on behalf of the EU. Pedestrian collisions with vehicles can't be avoided completely, so it important to keep trying to cut deaths and serious injuries when this happens," says energy absorption specialist, Concept Mouldings. The firm's Endura FPS products make vehicles safer for pedestrians and cut costs by protecting vehicles from minor bumps and scrapes.

Alarm cord for curtain-sided trailer security
Maple Fleet Services used the CV Show to launch its TIR Seal IQ curtain-sided trailer security system. This replaces the traditional bond cord with an air-filled cord. Any damage to this triggers an alarm to show the trailer's load security has been breached. "This radically reduces the vulnerability of this type of trailer while maintaining their operational flexibility," said Jonathan Richards, group marketing manager.

Scrap the fuel duty increase
The Freight Transport Association says the constant increase in diesel prices is a big worry for every UK business supplying goods and services. The FTA says that every firm that relies on freight is feeling the pinch as the bulk price of diesel for industry is near to £1.00 a litre. "Diesel is the lifeblood of the economy," said Geoff Dossetter, external affairs director for the FTA. "These prices are a major problem in themselves but they are now coupled with the dangerous uncertainty about how high they might reach before they stabilise - and uncertainty is the enemy of any business strategy".
Premier Pits does the business
The Spalding based firm says it had a "fantastic" CV Show, with its latest equipment on show both inside the halls and on the outside demonstration area. "We had a fantastic position at this year's show, our enquiry level beat all other years and we took over 30% more enquiries for site visits than last year," said Kate Burrell, marketing director.
