The new Fuel Max Technology, which includes steer, drive and trailer tyres, provides up to four per cent improved fuel economy, according to the company.

In analysing rolling resistance, Goodyear found the tread design, non skid depth and tread compound accounted for more than half of a truck tyre's rolling resistance.

In just under a year, Goodyear engineers have developed the new fuel-efficient tyres with an improved rubber compound and a tread of large stable blocks to reduce "tread squirm". The tread design combined with a closed shoulder design help to further promote even wear.

While company officials are citing up to a per cent hike in fuel economy with the new tyres, actual Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) test results showed an eight per cent improvement in fuel economy compared to standard Goodyear tyres.

The new Fuel Max tyres, which are currently only available in the United States, but could be introduced in Europe next year, will be priced at about four to five per cent  more than standard Goodyear tyres, but company officials say they offer comparable wear rates and no trade off in miles driven.
