Decision to defer Mottram bypass bemuses FTA
At a time when many areas of the country are putting forward an anti-lorry agenda, FTA has today expressed its bemusement at the North West Leaders’ Forum’s decision to defer construction of the much-needed Mottram Tintwhistle bypass.
The FTA has long argued that the Highways Agency scheme to construct a bypass in this part of the North West’s road network should be given the green light.
Malcolm Bingham, FTA’s Head of Road Network Management, said, “Lorries sitting in traffic can have significant environmental and cost implications, but these would be negated with the bypass.
“The difference between a goods vehicle stopping and starting every five metres in first gear, say, and the same vehicle moving freely is huge, especially when driving on the sort of inclines that can be found at Mottram Moor.”
The bypass would dramatically reduce traffic congestion and commercial vehicle operators and their customers would benefit from shorter and more reliable delivery times.
