Profit or Rip Off?

The RHA (Road Haulage Association) reacted angrily today to the news that Shell UK's profits last year were £9.3bn, a record for any company listed in the UK. This figure which is up 38% on last year was fuelled by the surge in crude oil prices in 2004 which hit more than $55 a barrel last October.

"How is it that our members, providing essential road transport for everyday life in the UK, operating on the tiniest of margins, battling with ever higher fuel bills which we are told are a world problem and nothing to do with the oil companies, apparently line the pockets of the fuel producers," said RHA Chief Executive Roger King.

King added, "No doubt economists will give good reasons why the oil companies are doing so well but there is a moral question here based on fairness, on sharing the burden. We look forward to a reduction in fuel prices, and quickly".
