UK Mail Trials Zero Emmission Vehicle
UK Mail, part of the Business Post Group, has begun a trial of a Modec electric vehicle at the company’s depot in Greenford, West London.
The eco friendly light commercial vehicle will be used to handle urban collections and deliveries within London’s Low Emission Zone, and forms part of the Business Post Group’s ongoing strategy to identify and adopt emission-reducing technologies that can achieve tangible benefits to the environment.
Modec is a purpose-built electric vehicle that is designed for maximum efficiency. It uses the latest rechargeable battery technologies making it completely emissions free, and can carry two tonnes of up to 100 miles at a speed of 50 miles an hour on a single charge. Furthermore, Modec’s silent, vibration free motor makes it ideal for early morning and late night deliveries in residential areas.
As well as the environmental attributes, Modec also offers significant reductions in running costs compared with diesel-powered alternatives. The vehicle is exempt from road tax, operator’s license and the London Congestion Charge, as well as achieving lower insurance rates and maintenance cost.
Guy Buswell, Chief Executive of Business Post Group commented: “We are acutely aware of the impact that transport operations have on the environment and the company is committed to reducing this impact. Our key objective is to establish a balance between cost effective solutions and changes which result in measurable benefits. Should this trial prove successful, we will look at wider investment into electric-powered vehicles as part of our ongoing fleet investment programme.”
