TIP Appointed Norfolkline's Preferred Telematics Supplier

Document Actions
For the past 4 years logistics operator Norfolkline has been fitting a range of telematics systems to its European fleet, with over 400 assets now featuring dedicated telematics equipment.
However the company has recently announced a further expansion to its trailer telematics programme by revealing that, with effect from May 2009, GE TIP Trailer Services has been appointed as its preferred telematics supplier for its trailer fleet across Europe.

“After careful consideration over a period of time, we have decided to confer preferred supplier status on TIP and its GE VeriWise ™ telematics systems. Not only are we convinced by the proven performance and reliability of the equipment, but we also recognise TIP’s unique ability to support its telematics products all over Europe, which is so important for our pan European operations. In addition, we also acknowledge the stability of TIP as a company and service support provider in this current difficult trading climate,” said Mervyn McIntyre, Equipment Manager, Norfolkline.

Over the next two months, the number of Norfolkline trailers fitted with TIP’s GE VeriWise telematics system will rise to exceed 300, in particular those trailers involved in Norfolkline’s growing business of high value logistics distribution, as well as many of the company’s latest single and double deck 13.6m reefer trailers.

The TIP GE VeriWise telematics system is already being used on a significant quantity of trailers involved in the distribution of high value electronics. These trailers have electronic rear door locking systems, which can only be unlocked using the GPRS system via random 4 digit codes. By the use of the GE VeriWise geo-fencing facility, Norfolkline can restrict the distribution routes for the trailers as well as monitor and access any unplanned geographical variations, flagging up deviations instantly or security breaches. The system can also be used to advise the customer of the imminent arrival of trailers at the ultimate destination or a number of other alerts via email, phone or text messaging using escalation processes.

On the company’s single and multi-temperature reefer trailers, Norfolkline will be using GE VeriWise to monitor load conditions inside the trailer body throughout the full journey cycle. The GE VeriWise system can directly access the refrigeration system of each trailer, providing accurate load data, including Setpoint readings, engine running hours and alarm codes, on a remote basis at all times during the journey. By accessing these valuable diagnostics remotely Norfolkline can prevent potential equipment breakdown, as well as schedule services based on actual reefer engine condition.

Norfolkline operates logistics services from locations all over Europe, providing ambient and refrigerated transportation of packed goods by road, rail and sea. With an asset fleet in excess of 3000 units, the continued roll out of telematics systems based on TIP’s GE VeriWise product is a key part of the company’s specialist logistics service.

As Mervyn McIntyre says, “The decision to move forward on telematics with TIP is part of a long standing relationship between the two companies that goes back many years. TIP fully understands our business requirements and, with GE VeriWise, have a telematics product that allows us to provide our customers with enhanced levels of operational efficiency, as well as inbuilt high standards of security.”

The current generation of GE TIP’s GE VeriWise solutions focuses on improving critical business areas; fleet utilisation, maintenance, up-time, on-time deliveries, freight and fleet security, and cold chain freight quality.  The solutions are based upon advanced technology that is customised specifically for trailers, but can also be installed on containers, swap bodies and rail cars within the Norfolkline European distribution fleet.

John Murray, Managing Director. TIP Trailer Services, UK & Ireland, said “With GE VeriWise, the modem has a range of wireless sensors that communicate with critical elements of the trailer like the reefer controller, reefer van temperature, braking systems, door, locks, reinforced curtains and truck identification. Our innovative telematics solutions draw on the insights and hands-on experience gained from decades in the transportation sector. GE, with GE VeriWise, has over 150,000 modem units activated globally, whilst TIP Trailer Services, has been operating for more than 40 years, with more than 75,000 trailers on the road and locations in over 20 European countries.”
