C&W toughs it out with 3.5-tonne Canter

Document Actions
C&W Fencing’s vehicles are expected to stand up to plenty of punishment – which explains why the Essex company has just taken delivery of its third 3.5-tonne Mitsubishi Fuso Canter in four months.
“What I like about the Canter,” explains C&W Director Andrew Warren, “is that it’s a lorry which has been shrunk down to 3.5 tonnes, rather than a van that’s been stretched.

“Our trade is not at all kind to vehicles – we go onto some pretty rough sites and will dump concrete posts and all kinds of other rubbish on them. But with its ladder frame chassis the Canter is tough and durable enough to take the abuse.”

Like its predecessors, C&W’s latest Canter 3C13 was supplied by Ipswich Mercedes dealer Orwell Truck and Van – the German manufacturer’s dealer network is also responsible for sales and servicing of the popular Japanese light truck range – and is fitted with a double dropside body by Commercial Bodies (East Anglia), of Norwich.

Unlike the other Canters, though, the new vehicle’s 125hp 3.0-litre engine meets Euro 4 emissions standards. This means that, like all Euro 4 Canters, it also came with a three-year, unlimited mileage manufacturer’s warranty – the cover on previous models was restricted to the first 100,000km.

Mr Warren continues: “We’re very pleased with our Canters. Their bodies are quite large – 4.2m long and 2.1m wide – and this means the lads have room for a good sized toolbox up front, as well as being able to carry all of the materials they might need for a full day’s work.

C&W Fencing is based in Wix, near Manningtree, where it manufactures a comprehensive range of railings, gates and general steelwork.

The company provides a complete fencing service to customers including schools, local authorities and the armed forces, throughout Essex, East Anglia, north and east London, and Kent. Given its expertise in steel security fencing, C&W has been very busy at ports like Felixstowe recently, where new anti-terrorism legislation has dictated that security must be tightened.

As well as the three Canters, the company’s skilled fence erecting specialists use a pair of long-wheelbase 7.5-tonne Mercedes Atego 815s and two 3.5-tonne Mercedes Sprinter chassis cabs, all with dropside bodies, while Contracts Manager Lee Morgan relies on a Mercedes Vito van to make site visits.

“I’ve known Orwell Truck and Van for years,” adds Mr Warren. “They’re a very good dealer, which is why we’re now moving our remaining non-Mercedes and Mitsubishi vehicles over to them. They do all of our servicing overnight so we don’t incur any downtime – we don’t even have to unload the vehicles, as the dealer has a secure yard.”
