No Escape for Trucks That Break the Law
Truck firms that put lives at risk are to be targeted in a major safety clampdown that will symbolise the determination of police to work together to ensure the safety and security of Europe’s roads.
To launch the week of action, police will carry out a concerted safety campaign on one of Europe’s major road corridors stretching from Greece to Ireland.
Check points will be established in all ten countries on the route. Officers will carry out checks on the legality and safety of trucks as well as clamping down on driving offences including speeding, drink driving and breaches of driver hours legislation.
The action has been co-ordinated by TISPOL – the European Traffic Police Network.
TISPOL President Adam Briggs said: “Expansion of the EU has seen a rapid rise in the number of trucks crossing borders to do business.
“Whilst the majority of truck operators and drivers act responsibly, there are a minority who flout the law and in doing so put themselves and other road users at risk.
“We are on the side of the legitimate truck companies. It is unfair on them to have to compete with firms who fail to invest in safe vehicles and working practices.
“Where lives are at stake you cannot cut corners. We want to send out the clear message that we will clamp down on those who ignore the law not just this week but throughout the year.”
Police and other traffic inspectors from over 20 countries will carry out checks on roads throughout the week starting March 10th. In some countries officer exchanges will take place to assist in translation and the spread of best practice.
The corridor route targeted for action on Monday March 10th runs through Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, UK, Ireland, though it should be stressed that checks will be carried out on other roads across Europe, night and day throughout the week.
