Irish Road Safety Campaign Focuses on Non-Nationals

Document Actions
Following a spate of fatal road accidents in the Republic of Ireland involving foreign nationals, the National Safety Council (NSC) has launched a new road safety campaign, targeting a number of ethnic communities.

The campaign includes a leaflet and poster entitled Road Safety & the Law . Both have been translated into eight foreign languages reflecting the main minority ethnic groups in Ireland namely Russian, Polish, Latvian, Lithuanian, French (targeting the west African community), Portuguese (targeting the Brazilian community living in Ireland), Arabic and Chinese. An English and Irish language version of the leaflet is also available.

The leaflet and poster will be distributed through the minority ethnic press, ethnic shops, advice centres, ports and airports, An Garda Siochana and Local Authorities.

In addition to this activity the NSC is running a newspaper advertising campaign in the minority ethnic press in Ireland in April and September 2006.

Launching the initiative, Transport Minister, Martin Cullen TD said,  "Today is a proactive response to a changing Ireland.  The number of minority ethnic groups and migrant workers living in Ireland has increased in recent times and it is important that integration into the community is given a high priority.

"The tragic collision in Donegal some weeks ago in which 5 migrant workers lost their lives is one example that collisions can affect all members of the community.

A language specific to nationalities should assist in getting the message across to all road users."

Commenting on the launch Mr. Noel Brett, Acting CEO of the National Safety Council said, "As a statutory body the National Safety Council has a public duty to provide members of our community who are from minority ethnic backgrounds with information on road safety and traffic laws in Ireland to assist their integration into Irish society.

"The timing of this campaign is also significant as cultural and ethnic diversity will be celebrated throughout the island of Ireland during Intercultural Week which runs from March 19th to the 25th March 2006."

Speaking at the launch Assistant Commissioner Mr. Eddie Rock said: "Life should never be taken for granted, but so many people do just that each time they get into a vehicle as a passenger and especially behind the wheel.  As the first long weekend of the year approaches, please respect the roads you and others use."

He added that this weekend Gardai would be mounting operations across the country to save lives as part of Operation Lifesaver concentrating on the detection of Drink Driving and other offences.

In addition to the Foreign Language campaign a road safety drive was also launched in the run up to the St. Patrick’s Bank Holiday weekend.

This includes the screening of a TV advert entitled 'Tolerate This' which focuses on the main killer behaviours on the roads and complements the activity of An Garda Siochana which will focus on drink driving detection over the weekend.
