It's coming towards us, but what is it?

Well actually, it's a truck - an oyster-harvesting truck. I'm sure somebody out in BLB-land will know all about these, but they are new to me.

While in northern Brittany on holiday the other week I saw a number of these amphibious vehicles, evidently purpose-built for negotiating the massive beaches and fast-moving tides of Cancale and Dinard. Incidentally, you just have to try Cancale oysters. This is what another example looks like from the back - watch out for that propeller while reversing!

But I wonder how they began. Did an enterprising fisherman grab a Landing Craft, Mechanized left over from the D-Day landings? And this is a picture of one in its natural habitat - the oyster beds of St Jacut:
